Sometimes you go to the diner across the street and it just isn’t enough. The food isn’t bad, but something is just missing. There’s this gaping hole in your soul and no matter how many greasy French fries or artery clogging steaks you stuff in your face it just doesn’t go away. What you don’t realise is that the coquettish waitress or that cute server at the counter just isn’t enough for your ravenous eyes. If you find yourself in such a dilemma, perhaps you should check out these peculiar restaurants from around the world where food is just a bonus to an already incredible experience…

1. Robot Restaurant,  Tokyo

Address: 1-7-1 Kabukicho, B2F, Shinjuku 160-0021, Tokyo Prefectur, Japan.

Robot restaurant

Let’s be honest, are you actually surprised that Japan has something as awesome as a robot show and dancing ladies in skimpy outfits with strobe lights fighting said robots to accompany your meal? Well they do. In Tokyo there’s a restaurant where you can enjoy live chaotic entertainment while you eat. Your meal will be but a distant memory but that lady kicking cyborg gorilla butt with a floral patterned folding fan will be a tale to tell your grandchildren.

2. Nocti Vagus,  Berlin

Address: Saarbrücker Str. 36, 10405 Berlin, Germany.

Nocti Vagus

Here’s a new twist to the term “blind date” Most of us who have the gift of vision are incredibly dependant on it. We base many of our judgements based on our sense of sight, be it a person’s attractiveness or your willingness to stuff something down your speak-hole. So, how would you feel if that sense was momentarily disabled and you were forced to trust the rest of your senses, and also a guide who will lead you to your table? The Nocti Vagus is a dark restaurant in Germany which is run by people putting faith in the staff who are said to be either blind or visually impaired. It is known for being a wholesome experience as after the initial fear settles, you get used to your surroundings and are able to truly enjoy the food and the music. Hannibal Lecter could be your chef and you wouldn’t even know. However, there’s now finally a restaurant where we can eat alone and not be judged.

3. Dinner in the sky, Brussels

Address: Atomium Square, Laeken, Brussels 1020, Belgium.

dinner in the sky

Have you ever wanted to have a nice filling lunch while dangling in the sky 150 feet above the ground? Probably not. And that is exactly why you should try this restaurant out, as it does make for a novel idea among restaurants from around the world where food is just a bonus. You and 21 other people will be strapped to your seats, while the chefs prepare your meal and the waiting-staff caters to your needs all while suspended in the air. Delicious food with the vague threat of an imminent death. Sounds exciting. And if the adrenaline gets too much for and you want to throw up, just remember that the world is your oyster.

4. Fortezza Medicea, Siena

Address: Piazza Caduti delle Forze Armate, 53100 Siena SI, Italy.

Fortezza Medicea

Fortezza Medicea is a restaurant in Siena, Italy where you’ll be politely asked to leave your cellular phones, nail filers and any sharp objects on your person that can be used as a weapon at the front desk. All that after you booked weeks in advance and had to submit full background checks to do so. It’s not because they don’t trust you. It’s probably because the Fortezza Medicea is a maximum security prison and the entire staff consists of convicted criminals. It’s almost as if they knew about your life-long dream of experiencing the trigger happy atmosphere of a prison cafeteria. Except form the stern eyed wardens keeping an eye on you as you try to keep your head down and eat with plastic utensils. The food however is too delicious to refuse, no seriously please don’t try to refuse the food.

5. Modern Toilet, Taipei

Address: NO. 50-7, 2 F Xining S. Rd., Taipei 10843, Taiwan.

Modern Toilet Resturant

Why let something as inconsequential as digestion come in the way of your full circle eating and excreting experience? Wouldn’t it be convenient and time saving to just sit at the toilet while you eat? No? Well, too bad, because Taiwan is bringing you exactly what you didn’t ask for. One of the strangest restaurants from around the world where food is just a bonus the Modern Toilet, as the name implies, is all about the toilets. Toilets which are modern. The seats are toilet shaped, the cutlery is toilet shaped and appearance of the food compliments the containers it arrives in. Thankfully though, the only toilets that have indoor plumbing are the ones inside the washroom stalls, for now.
